Students studying the following disciplines will have to pass 2 courses with Schein/certificate: Literature, Culture and History. The disciplines Sociology, Political Science, Linguistics and Economics require 3 courses with certificate if the disciplines are not chosen as a second major or minor.
If students specialize in History, Political Science or Economics UNA A is required. For all other disciplines - Literature, Culture, Linguistics, and Sociology UNA B is compulsory.
To complete their undergraduate studies students must pass two 15-minute oral exams: one in each discipline chosen as an area of emphasis. At least half of the exam must be completed in English. In effect, this means that students with North American Studies as Major will have two 15-minute exams in the two disciplines chosen as areas of emphasis, one of these in English the other one in German. Students minoring in North American Studies will have one 15-minute exam, half of which will be in English.
Students who have earned all required certificates (Scheine) can register for the intermediate exam. The following documents are required for registration at the office of Peter Fischer:
Upon registration, students will receive the official examination form. This examination form and the registration form are to be brought to the exams. After passing the intermediate exam, students need to hand in both forms at the academic advisement.
The intermediate exam is the prerequisite for all graduate courses!
