The XXVI Russian-American Seminar
210 Years of Russian-American Diplomatic Relations
On May 11-12, 2017, the School of International Relations of the St. Petersburg State University holds the 26th Annual Russian-American Seminar. The forthcoming seminar is dedicated to the 210th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and the United States of America.
Russian-American seminar at St. Petersburg State University is an annual forum bringing together researchers and practitioners to discuss topical issues of relations between the two countries. Traditionally, scholars from Russia, the United States and other countries, Russian and American diplomats, well-known statesmen and politicians of the United States and Russia, representatives of public organizations, entrepreneurs, as well as Russian and foreign students and post-graduates take part in the Seminar.
Russian-American Seminar in St. Petersburg State University is held under the support of the Committee for External Relations of St. Petersburg, St. Petersburg Association for International Cooperation, the “Polity” Foundation (Moscow).
Throughout over 20 years of its history, the Russian-American seminar featured contributions by: the first President of the USSR Mikhail S. Gorbachev; Russia`s ambassadors to the United States, including V. Lukin and Y. Vorontsov; deputies of the State Duma V. Nikonov, G. Starovoytova and I. Hakamada among others; the first Mayor of St. Petersburg A. Sobchak; US Ambassadors to Russian Federation and Consuls-General in St. Petersburg; university presidents and heads of major research centers; famous writers and historians from both Russia and the U.S.; editors-in-chief of various newspapers and magazines, etc.
The main topics to be discussed at the Plenary Meeting on May 11th 2017:
- Russia and the US Today: Common and Conflicting Interests
- Internal political processes in the US and their impact on foreign policy
- The future of Russian-American relations during Donald Trump's presidency: expectations and reality
The round tables (11-12 May, 2017) will be dedicated to the following topics:
1. The historical aspect of Russian-American relations
2. Topical international and regional issues of Russian-American relations
3. Russian and American approaches to modern security problems
4. Trade and investment cooperation and cultural ties between Russia and the United States
5. Russian-American relations as seen by young researchers
An invitation is hereby extended for attendance and participation by faculty and scholars from Russian and foreign universities and research centers, experts in the field of international relations, public officials, students and postgraduates.
The deadline for submitting proposals including a title and an abstract (up to 200-250 words) is April 20st, 2017. Please submit your proposals to firstname.lastname@example.org including: tentative title, brief abstract (up to 200-250 words) in Russian or in English, author`s last name, first name and middle name (if applicable), academic degree, current position, e-mail and phone number for contact.
Working languages of the Seminar are Russian and English.

The inauguration ceremony of the XXIV Russian-American Seminar will be held on May 11th 2017, 10:00 AM local time, at St. Petersburg State University`s School of International Relations (1/3 Smolnogo St., Entrance 8, Assembly Hall, St. Petersburg, Russia), entrance to the left of the Smolny Cathedral.
