Rene Kreichauf receives the IMISCOE - Rinus Penninx Best Paper Award

News from Jul 12, 2017

The 2017 IMISCOE - Rinus Penninx Best Paper Award has been awarded to René Kreichauf for his paper “From Forced Migration to Forced Arrival: The Campisation of Refugee Accommodation Centres in European Cities”. René Kreichauf accepted the award at the 14th Annual IMISCOE Conference, held in Rotterdam in June 28-30, 2017.

His paper explores the structures, objectives and consequences of the renaissance of large camp-like accommodation centers in cities in the context and aftermath of the so-called “European Refugee Crisis”. Applying the cases of Athens, Berlin and Copenhagen, the paper illustrates the relationship between (re-)produced “states of emergencies”, the tightening of EU and national asylum laws and the emergence and stabilization of refugee camps. Kreichauf calls this process of continuation, enlargement und fortification of camps and their extraterritorial and excluding structures and locations the “Campisation of European Refugee Accommodations”.

The IMISCOE - Rinus Penninx Best Paper Award, in honour of the founding father of IMISCOE, is an annual award for the best paper submitted to and presented at the IMISCOE conference. An anonymous review committee decides on the allocation of the award. Besides the honour of receiving the award, the prize winner also receives €750.

A version of the winning paper will be published in the journal Comparative Migration Studies.

IMISCOE is the largest European network of scholars in migration and integration. The focus is on comparative research and publications, in the IMISCOE book series as well as in the journal CMS. The annual IMISCOE conferences is a key-moment in the agendas of most migration scholars in Europe. In addition, IMISCOE contributes to the training of young researchers and their exchange throughout Europe. Also, IMISCOE plays an important role in the mutual dialogue between researchers and society (policy, politics, civil society).
