Internet directory of the American Studies Association

Virtual Library of Anglo-American Culture
In its two divisions history and literature, the Virtual Library of Anglo-American Culture provides access to online resources, periodicals, databases and the catalog of the State and University Library Göttingen, which is particularly strong in Anglo-American literature and history.

Database of Online Canadiana (DOC)
DOC is a project that aims to develop an interdisciplinary database providing access to selected online resources on Canada for students, teachers in secondary education, and university teachers alike. The database covers geography, history, social sciences, literature, language, and media studies.

USA-Library Mainz: Link Collection
A collection of thematically arranged links to academic websites dealing with American Studies

Institute for Canadian Studies, Augsburg: Link collection
A collection of thematically arranged links to academic websites dealing with Canadian Studies

Internet Public Library
A large link collection which covers all topics, with focus on the USA. Includes a comprehensive list of North American newspapers

Library Catalogs

Online Catalog of Freie Universität Berlin
Contains all books published since 1990 and a growing number of older books. When you click “Datenbanken/Kataloge” you will find more catalogs of other important libraries in Berlin, such as the State Library and Humboldt University Library.

Digital Library of Freie Universität Berlin
Provides access to and information about all databases and electronic journals held by the FU. Also provides possibility to search in several databases with only one query.

Library Cooperative Berlin-Brandenburg (KOBV)
Search engine for a simultaneous search in all important library catalogs of the region. Includes a library guide as well as a gateway to selected online resources.

Karlsruhe Virtual Catalog (KVK)
Meta-catalog which offers a simultaneous search in book trade and library catalogs worldwide.

Periodicals Database (ZDB)
Complete directory of periodical holdings in German academic libraries. Unfortunately, call numbers are only listed for a few big libraries – not including the library of the JFKI.

The Library of Congress
On its website, the largest library in the world provides access to its catalogs and digital collections.

Library and Archives Canada
Since they merged, the national library and the national archive of Canada have presented their holdings and services on their common website. Contains a comprehensive collection of freely accessible digital documents.

WorldCat
The union catalog of the library consortium OCLC is the largest library catalog in the world. Its focus lies on North American library holdings. This resource is only accessible within the intranet of the FU due to copyright restrictions.

Book Trade

Amazon
The Amazon database contains a wide range of international titles in addition to the German ones. It also offers a large number of announced titles and books that are out of print. For an even bigger range of English language books, visit Amazon.com.

Book Catalog
This catalog offers a very clearly arranged extended search screen. The catalog is focused on German books in print, however, it also contains a number of international titles.

Advanced Book Exchange (abebooks)
The world´s largest database for second hand books. As it started as an American website, it contains a wide range of American books which are offered by second hand bookshops or individuals.

booklooker / disklooker
A German sales website for second hand books, movies, and audio media. Both individuals and second hand bookshops sell their goods here.

Central Index of Second Hand Books (ZVAB)
ZVAB is the central sales database of German second hand bookshops. It also contains a growing number of titles from foreign book shops. However, the database is not accessible for individual vendors in order to avoid the flea market character of abebooks.

eurobuch
A meta-search engine that searches in several commercial book catalogs, among them abebooks and Amazon catalogs from various countries. Second hand as well as new books can be found here.

Movies & Music

Film Literature Index
A free bibliographical database that records over 700 000 academic articles and reviews about film studies published from 1976-2001.

Internet Movie Database (IMDb)
The largest movie database on the internet contains information, photos and reviews on countless films and their creators from the earliest beginnings to movies still in production. The project was started by a group of movie aficionados in 1990. The content is still largely contributed by the users themselves, though the IMDb was bought by Amazon long ago.

Script-o-rama
Offers the full texts of several hundred screenplays free of charge.

Movie Review Query Engine
Comprehensive database of movie reviews in English.

all music guide / all movie guide / all game guide
A reliable database of recordings from all musical genres. Its associated websites deal with movies and computer games. Free registration is required to use all functions.
