(5) Conference Announcement: Symposium – “Feminisms 2018” at the Siebold Kollegium/JMU Würzburg
Date: July 3, 2018
"Siri, what is feminism?" It was thanks to such queries that "feminism" advanced to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary's " Word of the Year." According to Merriam-Webster, the look-up rate for the term over the course of 2017 was 70% higher than in 2016. Spikes in interest could be correlated to reporting on events such as the Women's March and the first stirrings of #MeToo as well as the debut of films like Wonder Woman. Most fundamentally, however, the surge in inquiries suggests that feminism has emerged as a key, if not uncontroversial or easily defined, factor in current cultural dynamics.
This day-long symposium brings together established and emerging scholars to interrogate contemporary mobilizations of feminism, but also to explore the wider connections, implications, and varieties of feminist intervention.
The symposium is free and open to the public. For planning purposes, registration would be appreciated: firstname.lastname@example.org
