The John F. Kennedy Institute warmly congratulates Prof. em. Heinz Ickstadt on his 90th birthday.

As Professor Emeritus of American Literature at Freie Universität Berlin, Heinz Ickstadt has made outstanding contributions to the study of North American literature and culture. His extensive scholarship encompasses poetry, fiction, and art, and includes his acclaimed commentary for the German-language edition of Ezra Pound’s Cantos.

Beyond his scholarly work, Ickstadt has played an important role in shaping the field of American Studies in Germany and Europe. He served as President of both the German Association of American Studies and the European Association of American Studies, contributing his expertise and commitment to strengthening the discipline and its international networks.

His scholarly achievements and dedicated engagement have been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including distinctions and fellowships from Fulbright, the Rockefeller Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Government of Canada, and various universities. Most recently, he received the Volkmar and Margret Sander Prize from Deutsches Haus at NYU.

We warmly congratulate Heinz Ickstadt on this special milestone and thank him for his lasting contributions to American Studies and to the academic community at the John F. Kennedy Institute.
