Research Colloquium: Lecture by Aaron Wiener: Media Upheaval in Germany and the United States
Aaron Wiener worked as the Washington Post's Berlin bureau chief until February. He was previously a reporter and editor for the Post in Washington, a senior editor at Mother Jones magazine, and a Berlin correspondent for the Los Angeles Times. He lives in Charlottenburg with his wife and two children.
Abstract: This is a time of great upheaval in journalism across the globe. AI is upending business models and journalistic practices, while billionaire newspaper and TV owners are imposing their vision (and often political views) on an increasing number of media outlets. Aaron Wiener has experienced this firsthand. He came to Germany last summer as the Washington Post's Berlin bureau chief, only for the paper -- under owner Jeff Bezos -- to lay off nearly half its journalists in February, including most of its international staff. Aaron will share his thoughts on the changing media landscape in the United States and Europe and place the current moment in its historical context.
Aaron is also a former housing reporter, at Washington City Paper and the Washington Post. He'll discuss the extreme challenges in the housing market in the United States and Germany, and the divergent approaches the two countries -- and particularly their capital cities -- are taking to addressing these challenges.
