PhD Project
“Unions, Labor, and the Bible: Evangelicalism and the Politics of Industry in the U.S. South”
In my dissertation I investigate how evangelical Christianity shapes labor politics in the Southern states of the U.S., with a case study focus on South Carolina. The United States has unionization rates significantly lower than other Western economies, and never developed a political labor movement comparable to its European counterparts. There are many factors that contributed to this development, but there is no scholarly consensus on a definite cause. Earlier studies find an interesting correlation: low union density is associated with high church attendance. My project analyzes this correlation further by focusing on the interaction between evangelicalism and labor politics in South Carolina, the state with the lowest levels of unionization in the country. In doing so, the thesis sheds light on the politics of evangelicalism in a region undergoing fast industrial growth. The project speaks to discussions regarding the historical connections between evangelicalism and corporate capitalism, while remaining sensitive to the possibility of grassroots working class mobilization.
