Research Grant
Research Grant
This program is promoted by Freie Universität Berlin and supported by the United States Information Agency and the Canadian Embassy.
Under this program, the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies awards grants of between four and six weeks duration for scholars with a permanent European residence. The extensive holdings of the Institute's library make it possible for European scholars to conduct an initial period of research in Berlin. For an introduction to the holdings of the library please download the Guide to the Research Library of the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies [pdf]. PhD candidates and advanced scholars are invited to apply. Projects must be related to the United States of America and/or Canada in the fields of:
As the library is open to the public, stipends will only be given to scholars living more than 100km from Berlin.
The amount of the stipend will be determined according to the following guidelines:
Full Stipend
- Graduate students without a PhD € 921.-- for four weeks
- Scholars with a PhD € 1330.-- for four weeks
Guest Stipend
- To cover the cost of staying in Berlin scholars who continue to receive salaries from their home institutions will receive € 665.-- per month
In addition every scholar will receive a fixed-contribution towards travel expenses and € 100.-- for photocopies. As these stipends are not subject to income tax or social security contributions, applicants awarded full stipends may not hold other jobs. All scholars are, however, required to take out full health insurance for the duration of the grant. No stipends are given to scholars living within a 100 km radius of Berlin, because our library is open to the public.
