STUDENT WORKSHOP
Feminist Media Studies at 50: Power, Representation & Resistance

Fifty years ago, feminist media studies entered university classrooms as an intervention. It forced academics to reassess their gendered understandings of culture, power, and representation. On Friday, November 7, Hannah Curran-Troop (University of Manchester), Rosalind Gill (Goldmiths), Jo Littler (Goldsmiths) and Annelot Prins (Freie Universität Berlin) will revisit the past, engage with the present, and imagine the future of this field. Students are warmly invited to think alongside these scholars during this timely and engaging event.

What to expect:
- In the first part of the two-hour workshop, our guest scholars will share personal and intellectual reflections on working in feminist media studies today.
- In the second part, we will collaboratively analyze a contemporary cultural object, unpacking its representational politics and ideological tensions, and locating it firmly in its context within creative industries and broader power
structures.
- In the final part of the workshop we look ahead. What does it mean to analyze media through a feminist lens in a firmly neoliberal and increasingly right-wing political climate? And how do we defend and sustain feminist media studies against mounting hostility from those in power?

Who can attend?
This workshop is open to undergraduate and graduate students from all departments. No prior knowledge is required, though a curiosity and interest in topics like gender, media, culture, and politics is helpful.
