Abstract: 

Drawing on extensive research for her book New Music, New Allies: American Experimental Music in West Germany from the Zero Hour to Reunification (2006), musicologist Amy C. Beal reflects on the history of transatlantic relationships between the two countries, and speculates about where that legacy has brought the networks of contemporary music performance in the early twenty-first century. Highlights of this history include the seminal role of German public radio stations as tools of dissemination for non-commercial and non-academic American music.

Speaker bio:

Pianist and musicologist Amy C. Beal is Professor of Music at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She holds a Ph.D. in historical musicology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and has taught previously at Princeton University, Bates College, and Mills College. She has been the recipient of DAAD and NEH research grants. Her research specializes in American and contemporary music, and she is the author of three books: New Music, New Allies: American Experimental Music in West Germany from the Zero Hour to Reunification (2006); Carla Bley (2011); and Johanna Beyer (2015). Her current research focuses on the underrepresentation of women in American music history, and she is currently working on her fourth book, a biography of American composer Lucia Dlugoszewski (1925-2000). In addition to publishing numerous journal articles and book chapters, she has contributed numerous liner notes for New World Records publications, and serves on their Board of Trustees.

The event will take 1 hour: a 30-minute presentation by the speaker and a 30-minute discussion.
