Abstract:

As Graphic Novels are a form of mass media with a broad field of audience. Therefore it seems to be interesting in which way Graphic Novels effects on collective memory. There are a lot of Graphic Novels that are based on historical events or have a historical impact.

Hugo Frey will make the Introduction of History in Graphic Novels and Laurike in 't Velt will speak about the work with Hugo Frey and her own research on Representation of Genocide in Graphic Novels.

Speakers bio:

Professor Hugo Frey (University of Chichester) is a cultural and political historian whose research work focuses on twentieth-century France and Francophone Europe with special emphasis on the politics of visual culture. He has published over 40 substantial outputs in this field including Louis Malle (Manchester University Press 2004); Nationalism and the Cinema in France (Berghahn Books 2014) and The Graphic Novel: An Introduction [co-author] (Cambridge University Press, 2015), . In addition, he has published journal articles with Journal of European Studies, South Central Review, Modern and Contemporary France, and Yale French Studies, among others. His writings on Pierre Benoit have featured with Nebraska University Press and in turn, were translated and published in France in the Cahiers des Amis de Pierre Benoit.

Laurike in ‘t Veld is a lecturer at the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication, and a research associate at the Centre for Historical Culture. She holds a PhD in History from the University of Chichester, United Kingdom (2016). Her research interests include popular cultural depictions of war and genocide, non-fictional comics, and discourses around (Holo)kitsch.

The event will take 1 hour: a 30-minute presentation by the speaker and a 30-minute discussion.
