On Tuesday, July 9h, award winning Canadian author Madeleine Thien will give a reading.

Madeleine Thien is the author of three novels, Certainty (2007), Dogs at the Perimeter (2011), and Do Not Say We Have Nothing (2016), which won the Scotiabank Giller Prize, the Governor General’s Literary Award, and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. She has also published the short story collection Simple Recipes (2001), and her essays have appeared in Granta, the Guardian, the Financial Times, Five Dials, and Brick. Her books and stories have been translated into 23 languages. 

The daughter of Malaysian-Chinese immigrants to Canada, Thien’s thematic focus spans from contemporary Canada to the violent upheavals of 20th century Southeast Asian history. 

Currently Thien shares the Samuel Fisher visiting professorship with Lebanese-Canadian writer Rawi Hage at the Peter Szondi Institute for Comparative Literature at Freie Universität Berlin.
