Beyond the elections. Seven trends that will shape US domestic and foreign policy
Many political decision-makers in Germany and other EU states are likely to hope that transatlantic relations will return to calmer waters after the upcoming U.S. presidential elections on November 3 if the Democrat Joe Biden wins. However, the domestic and foreign policy scope of the American president is also determined by long-term and structural developments that will have an impact beyond the next (and the next but one) US elections. Seven trends are particularly relevant in this respect. Taken together, they illustrate that foreign policy demands and domestic resources in the United States are increasingly diverging.
