On the first anniversary of the tragedy that took place at Pittsburgh’s Tree-of-Life Synagogue, the Clarion Quartet will perform a selection of mid-twentieth century chamber music written by suppressed composers. Following the concert, Manfred Honeck, the musical director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and writer Adam Ehrlich Sachs will discuss culture and its role in achieving peace, as well as the impact of music and literature on an engaged international community in a conversation moderated by Academy alumnus Harry Liebersohn.
In its concerts in the US and Europe, the Clarion String Quartet emphasizes the music of those composers whose lives were upended, or worse, during the years of the Nazi regime in Europe, when their work was banned and labeled “degenerate.” Its members are Marta Krechkovsky, violin; Jennifer Orchard, violin; Tatjana Mead Chamis, viola; and Bronwyn Banerdt, cello.
