Abstract:

The lecture will deal with the American presence in Cuba. It is divided into two parts. The first one spans the 19th-century setting in which the Americans contemplate the territorial acquisition of Cuba, while the Cubans at the same time prepare to wage war for national sovereignty.  For the second part, the lecture will conduct a 'forensic' examination of what transpired during the US military occupation (1899-1902) and the repercussions of the US intervention in the decades that followed, culminating in the Cuban revolution of 1959.
