Forschungsprojekte

Der amerikanische Roman im 20. Jahrhundert: Transformationen des Mimetischen.

Eine Anthologie amerikanischer Lyrik zusammen mit Eva Hesse (München): eine Anthologie amerikanischer Lyrik, zweisprachig mit Einleitung und Kommentar (im Rahmen einer vierbändigen Anthologie englischsprachiger Dichtung beim Beck Verlag, München; erscheint 1999).

Die Moderne in den USA Die Moderne in den USA: von der modernen zur postmodernen Avantgarde. Während aus europäischer Perspektive die amerikanische Moderne zumindest in ihrer Frühphase eher als ein provinzielles Phänomen erscheint, verstand sie ein Teil der amerikanischen Künstler und Literaten als Projekt der Herausbildung einer Nationalkultur im Zeichen von Modernisierung und Modernität. Es geht um die Herausarbeitung spezifischer amerikanischer Aspekte im Kontext einer internationalen und interkulturellen Moderne in der Zeit nach den beiden Weltkriegen. Habilitationen und Dissertationen, die in diesem Zusammenhang entstehen: Susanne Rohr, Zeichen von Wirklichkeit: Eine semiotische Untersuchung ausgewählter Werke der amerikanischen Literatur von 1890-1986 (Habilitationsprojekt) Sabine Sielke, Reading Rape. The Rhetoric of Sexual Violence in American Literature and Culture (Habilitationsprojekt).

Demokratie als Konstitutionsbedingung der amerikanischen Literatur und Kultur (mit Winfried Fluck) Das Projekt ist Teil des laufenden Graduiertenkollegs am Institut und versucht, die Geschichte der amerikanischen Literatur als Resultat einer Auseinandersetzung mit einem Demokratisierungs- und Enthierarchisierungsprozeß zu begreifen, in dem Demokratie vor allem als Erfahrung und Lebensform verstanden wird.
