Academic freedom in the United States is under pressure: since the re-election of President Donald Trump, the academic community has been confronted with massive restrictions: Funding for renowned universities has been cut, programs on diversity, equality and inclusion have been stopped, academic institutions have been put under pressure and thousands of employees have been laid off. International researchers are leaving the country - an open letter spoke of a “climate of fear”.

About SCRIPTS:
The Cluster of Excellence “Contestations of the Liberal Script (SCRIPTS)” was established at Freie Universität Berlin in 2019 as part of the Excellence Strategy of the German federal and state governments and was extended in May 2025 for a second funding phase starting in 2026. The cluster examines the challenges facing liberal social models worldwide from a comparative, historical and interdisciplinary perspective.
SCRIPTS brings together the expertise of five leading Berlin research institutions and promotes exchange between academia, politics and society - including through public discussion formats, exhibitions, workshops and background discussions.
