The Graduate School of North American Studies promotes the reconcilability of parenthood and academic research activity. It thus grants doctoral candidates with children additional financial support and special provisions regarding submission deadlines.

Parents can either ask for additional financial support for child care services or extend their scholarship for up to twelve months (in certain cases up to fifteen months) in order to finish their dissertation. Detailed information on the GSNAS' measures of family and childcare support can be obtained from the Graduate School's office.
