Important databases for American Studies

Project Muse is an electronic full-text archive that provides access to 300 journals in social sciences and humanities published by the leading academic publishers in the Anglo-American regions.

JSTOR contains digitized academic journals on all subjects. Their digital archive comprises ca. 2000 journals digitized completely from the first volume. The most current issues of a journal are not available in JSTOR.

The MLA International Bibliography provides searchable access to more than 2 million bibliographic citations to journal articles, books, dissertations, and scholarly websites. It indexes materials from 1921 to the present in academic disciplines such as language, literature, folklore, linguistics, literary theory and criticism, and the dramatic arts.

Microforms

Microforms form a large part of the library holdings. Almost all newspapers, and some journals and magazines, are only available in microform. Collections on specific subjects or persons complete the microform holdings. Most titles were funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation).

All the collections can be found in the FU-Katalog or Primo. Only some titles of individual books or documents from the collections are searchable there. The rest can be found in the guides that come with every collection and are available in the library. An overview on our microform collections can be found in the Research Guide.

Please note down the call number when you have found a microform collection that you would like to use - you need it to find the films in our microform stacks. You can then take the films from the stacks and use them with our microreaders, reader-printer or our microscanners. Inter-library loan is also possible, please contact your home library for more details.
